Approval of Minutes

Minutes from the January 27 School Council Meeting were approved as submitted.

Old Business

Dean Mack, Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations addressed future growth at IMS.  He handed out and went over enrollment projections for the district.  He also gave out copies of the Housing Development/Student Generation Study Summary and explained what the numbers meant.  This document only shows projected housing and does not take into consideration the “aging in place” which will offset much of the increase shown.  He went over some options for handling the increase in district enrollment.  These options could include changing boundary lines, reconfiguring grade levels at the elementary schools, turning the Freshman Campus into Middle School #5, enlarging Liberty, and opening a 6th Grade Campus in the south end.  He also addressed the Grandfathered Base Salaries and Levy Rates.  Dean was asked how big he thought IMS would get.  He thought it would depend on how rapidly development happens.  He mentioned that the district needs to be very cautious about building new schools.  Some other options for IMS may be to move programs out of the school, re-draw boundary lines, add portables or add permanent facilities to the building.

It was agreed to write a letter to the Scoping Committee to make sure they look at middle schools needs and what the ideal size is for a middle school.  It was also agreed that Marianne and Corrine would meet with the IMS reps on the Scoping Committee.

New Business

Tonia Neal was not at the meeting to discuss ASB Fund Raisers and the issue was tabled.

Corrine shared a letter from the Beaver Lake Middle School Site Council about their concern for the nutritional value of school lunches.  The District is looking at the ala carte items offered at schools.  IMS has already changed many of the items sold to healthier snacks.
