Middle School Council Minutes
June 7, 2001
Chairperson: Leslie Nielsen Gatekeeper: Brian DeBroux Scribe: Sandie Pike
Leslie Nielsen reported that the 8th grade team discussed the purchase of an enlarger and felt the cost was too high for something with such minimal use and there was also concern on the upkeep and supplies.
NEW BUSINESS
Leslie reported that the 8th grade team would like to discuss adding the passing time back into the daily schedule and having one passing period be longer - maybe ten minutes or perhaps having one longer break between 2nd and 3rd period. It was agreed not to make any changes to the schedule for next year, but to look at this issue in the future. There was also discussion on looking at SLC – reflection and evaluation.
Sarah Crist suggested adding a page to the Student Handbook for Hall Passes. The students would sign in their planner, the teacher would also sign and they would carry their planner with them as their hall pass. Council agreed to add this page. Sandie will call Kopachuck Middle School to get a copy of the page they use. If this does not work, Sarah will make up a sample page.
David Kappler went over a few small concerns regarding Food For Thought Night. It was suggested that the money raised be put into a scholarship fund. It was also suggested having a DARE officer in attendance. It was also suggested that the evening not be scheduled during a track meet and the time be changed to 6 to 8 p.m. Marilyn Luckman thanked Kurt Wieland for all his hard work on this successful event.
Ann Perkins would like to establish a mentorship program where 8th grade students would be paired up with a group of 6th grade students for the entire school year and they would be involved in various scheduled activities. Sarah Crist and Ann would like to have this program for next year. Staff is asked to give them any suggestions. Sandy Grace suggested a survey in the 7th grade SLC classes to get an idea of the interest.
Marilyn reported that she is working on the schedule for next year. She also reported that there will be changes to the Special Needs program for next. Students will be in the mainstream and will go to Resource classes – a reverse of how it is now. Labs will be skill-based.
ASB Report
Megan C. handed out a survey regarding Pledge for Peace Week to be given to students in SLC classes to see if it should be considered for next year. Staff is asked to discuss the survey and get any feedback to Ann as soon as possible.
Carnival Day is happening June 21. It will include a dunk tank. Staff and students who agree to be on the dunk tank will have a container with their name or picture on it on display. Students will vote for who they want to dunk by putting coins in the containers.
Ann asked staff to consider vending machines for candy, nuts, etc. as a fundraiser. She has information on a company who would put it in and maintain it. Team leaders are asked to discuss in teams and bring feedback to the next School Council.
Team Reports
6th Grade
Sarah reported some changes the 6th grade team would like to make on the Pre-Arranged Absence Form. The form will be brought to the next School Council meeting for approval. The 6th grade team also requested that a note be made on Field Trip Permission forms that students must make up work missed as a result of the field trip. A note will be included on this form. The team also expressed concern that lists of students going on the field trip was not being published soon enough. All staff are reminded that these lists need to go out to staff at least three days prior to the field trip. The team also wanted to thank John Macartney for his presence in the halls. They really appreciate it and it has made a difference.

assignment. Student TA’s must wear
lanyards. Do not give breaks during
lunch times (10:43 – 11:13 or 11:37 – 12:07).
Results of the survey from 5th Grade Curriculum Night was given out to be shared with teams.
Marilyn reported that six new teachers have now been hired.
June 11 will be an All School Social. Ann has parent chaperones lined up but asked staff to help with getting the students either in the dance or off campus. It will be a sock hop – no shoes or bare feet.
Remember the staff “get together” on June 14 at 1:30 in the Library.
There was discussion on whether all students would be required to wear lanyards with their ASB cards next year. Marilyn asked teams to discuss and send her their thoughts and suggestions as soon as possible.
