Middle School Council Minutes
November 29,
2001
Chairperson: Ann Perkins Gatekeeper: Leah Van Eenwyk Scribe: Sandie Pike
Ron stated that staff would be receiving a ballot to vote on when IMS would like to implement the Learning Improvement Calendar – either September 2002 or September 2003. This ballot will include a place for comments and/or concerns. Ron also clarified the question of EA hours with the Late Start schedule. As EA hours are driven by enrollment, there should be no reduction in the number of EA hours. Parents suggested that Ron put out a letter to parents explaining where we are with the calendar, how the time would be used, etc.
Ron met with students who are interested in serving on the Locker Committee and they are looking for a time to meet that will work for everyone. These students will talk to others about the issues surrounding lockers to begin the first meeting.
Ron will be contacting those who volunteered to serve on the School Council Committee and have them get staff input for the first meeting. It is hoped that this committee will be able to meet prior to the next School Council meeting.

ASB Report
Sixty-three children have been adopted for the Adopt-A-Child program. Classes will receive posters Friday along with instructions on procedures for delivering the gifts to ASB. It is very important for everyone to include the child’s name and ID number on the gift and to bring ALL the gifts to ASB at one time.
Friends of the Library will be handling the dance on Friday for 7th and 8th graders as well as the social for 6th graders on December 14 from 2:30 to 4:00. An Activity Bus will be available for the students. Sixth grade SLC classes will be asked to take a rough head count as the date gets closer to determine how many students anticipate riding the Activity Bus home after the social.
Ken Wong from Eastside Youth Services will be coming in to the leadership class next week to offer bullying, teasing and harassment training to the ASB Leadership class. This training will be continued next trimester as well.
ASB would like to propose a Buddy Link program be implemented at IMS similar to the one at Issaquah High School. This would be to introduce kids to each other and work to establish relationships for kids between grade levels. This might work to improve our school community and climate. SLC classes would be paired up, preferably 7th and 8th grade SLC classes with 6th grade SLC classes. The teachers would meet and individually pair up students from both classes. Bi-monthly the buddies would come together for an activity. ASB would make available the activities to teachers – early stages would be “getting to know you” type activities, then maybe “teach/play your favorite board game”, etc. Team leaders are asked to get input from teams and get feedback to Ann as soon as possible.
The AM Assembly scheduled on December 5 will feature Mark Brown, an inspirational speaker provided by QSP.
ASB is looking at purchasing hoists for the wrestling mats, new singlets for the wrestling team, new leotards for the gymnastics team and new sound tech equipment.
Information will be coming out soon for the Holiday Window Decorating contest.
