Issaquah Middle School Council Minutes - Approved

October 24, 2002

Approval of Minutes

Minutes from the School Council Meeting on June 13 were presented and approved with the following corrections.  Under New Business, change Parent Rep Lise Place’s student to a 6th grader and change PTSA Liaison to Mardi Nystrom from Marianne Kersten.  This leaves one Parent Rep position open.

Parent/Community Comments

Susan Marcolina presented the idea of holding a Science Fair at IMS.  Ron Thiele will check with science teachers to see if there is any interest and report at the next School Council meeting.

Old Business

The IMS Decision Making Model needs to be adjusted so that it aligns with the new Site Council Bylaws.  Ron will take this to the Team Leaders to make changes and will bring it back for School Council approval.

The open positions on School Council were discussed.  It was agreed that a notice would be put in the next Panther Press asking for volunteers to fill the Secretary and Parent Rep positions.  Ron will check with Ann Perkins on the two Student Reps needed.  These should come from the elected ASB officers.

New Business

Ron reported that the Learning Improvement Calendar seems to be going well.  We have had five late start Wednesdays and staff has used the time very well.  Copies of minutes from all the team meetings are kept in the office.  There was some concern last spring that student absentee levels would be high.  So far, all five Wednesdays have had very low absentee levels.  Overall, it has been positive for both staff and students.

Ron shared his concern about the traffic congestion caused by students being dropped off and picked up in the IMS parking lot.  Students should be encouraged to ride the bus.  Parents are encouraged to keep the flow of cars moving and not stop in the parking lot – it doesn’t take long for traffic to back up.  Also, the Issaquah Police are monitoring cars making unsafe U-turns on 1st Avenue by the Community Center and drivers may be ticketed.  A good alternative may be for parents to drop off or pick up students on Bush Street.

ASB Report

Andy C., a 7th grade student, reported that next week is Spirit Week.  Monday – World Series Day, Tuesday – Wacky Day, Wednesday – Super Hero Day, Thursday – Costume Day and Friday – Pajama Day.

The magazine drive is over and we did quite well this year although we fell short of our goal.
