Issaquah Middle School Council Minutes – Proposed

May 22, 2003

 

Approval of Minutes

            Minutes from the April 24 School Council Meeting were approved as corrected.  The ASB report is changed to read “Middle School Principals are proposing cuts from the General Fund and will be asking ASB to restore the funding.  In the “Other” section the words “3 club stipends” will be changed to read “stipends.”

 

Parent/Community Comments

            None

           

Old Business

            Ron reported that the staff voted to remove caffeinated, carbonated beverages from the student vending machines starting in September.

            Ron also reported that students will be voting on two different PE uniform logo designs.  They are displayed in the gallery.  PE uniforms will be $20.00 for the shirt and shorts and will be available for purchase at pre-registration.

            Mary Lou presented the slate of nominations for the 2003-04 School Council:  Chairperson-Pat Randall, Council Secretary-Sandie Pike, District Liaison-Susan Marcolina, Community Rep-Cathy Jones/Ross Hoover and Parent Reps-Shari Koppel, Lise Place, Marianne Kerston, Margie Gerrity, Hester Winn, Leslie Nielsen.  A vote was taken and the members were approved.

 

New Business

            It was proposed that with the new Bell Times for next year, School Council Meetings begin at 2:15.  The start time for meetings was approved.  There was discussion on the new Bell Times of 7:37 a.m. to 2:01 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 9:42 a.m. to 2:06 p.m. on Wednesday.  There was a question raised on the time of the Activity Bus.  Sandie will check on having it arrive at 3:30 or 3:40 instead of 4:00. 

            The By-Laws were reviewed and changed as follows: Article V Section 4 the words “they will lose” will be changed to “they may lose.”  Article VII Section 6. will be added:  Gatekeeper  A Council member will be selected at the previous meeting to be responsible for soliciting length of time required by speakers for agenda items prior to commencement of the meeting, monitoring time during meeting, and notifying the Chairperson of exceeding of time limits.  Section 6. All Council Members will be changed to Section 7.  Article VIII Section 5. will be added and will read A Gatekeeper will monitor duration of discussion on agenda items as per time limits assigned prior to the start of the meeting.  A Gatekeeper will be selected for the next meeting.

            Ron reported that a District Advisory Team is being put together.  This team will be made up of community members, teachers, administrators, etc.  Parent volunteers from the school are needed.  It will be a two-year commitment.  Notify Ron or Sandie if you are interested in serving on this team.

6th Grade

            None

 

7th Grade

            Kurt Wieland reported that 7th graders are completing their community service projects and are putting together scrapbooks, which will be displayed at the last Chorus Concert on June 12.

 

8th Grade

            Leah Van Eenwyk reported that Spring Forum has begun and will run through June 13.  The 8th grade cruise is June 6 and promotion is June 23.

Classified Staff

            None

 

ASB Report

            ASB elections are tomorrow during an AM Assembly.  The Talent Show was a success.

 

PTSA Report

            The PTSA approved a $750 grant request for blinds in the Commons.  They also approved a $2000 grant for the Safenet program.  The staff appreciation luncheon will be at 11:00 on June 24.

 

Community Center

            Cathy Jones reported that Issaquah Youth Advisory Board applications are now available.  June 13 is the final Middle School Dance – parent volunteers are needed.  The Eastside Youth Hall of Fame unveiling is June 1 at 1:00.  Seventy eastside youth were nominated.  The Community Center will be offering summer programs – Adventure Camp for students entering grades 5, 6 and 7 and Adventure Pursuit Expedition for students entering grades 8 and 9.

            Copies of the new By-Laws will be brought to the next School Council Meeting.

            Lisa Margolies thanked Sandi Pike and Pat Randall for all the work done with the National Junior Honor Society.  Ron thanked Mary Lou Pauly for all she has done as PTSA Co-President and School Council Chairperson.  Ron Thiele will be Gatekeeper at the next meeting.
