Physical Education

Course Description-Grading Criteria

Issaquah Middle School

General Physical Education is designed to help each student attain awareness and appreciation of movement while also meeting their present and future Physical Education needs.  These needs will be met through the participation in a wide variety of physical activities that lead to the development of coordination, skill and endurance.  Emphasis will be placed on lifetime activities and through experience in these activities will help the student develop knowledge, understanding and attitudes which will result in desirable practices necessary to maintain physical, social, emotional, and mental health.

General Physical Education is for 6,7, and 8th grade students, separated by grade, and one trimester is required of each student during the school year.

Grading:  Each student’s grade will be based on a combination of participation and written points earned during the trimester.  Three (3) participation points may be earned each day of the trimester and written points will be earned from tests and quizzes as well as skills testing.  Approximately 75% of the student’s grade will consist of participation points earned, while 25% of the students grade will consist of written points earned.

Since it is important for students to participate in a positive manner and be active in the physical education activities, 75% of each student’s grade, (3) points per day, will fall under the following three participation areas:

 1.--Dressing out/Uniform:

(1)   point of credit will be given each day students are dressed in proper clothing including: IMS P.E. Uniform.  Grey T-shirt, maroon shorts, white socks and clean court shoes only.  If a student does not dress out he or she will be given a non-suit and will loose (1) participation point for that day the first time.  Second non-suit will result in loss of (1) participation point for that day and a call home about the situation.  Third non-suit will result in loss of (1) participation point for that day and a referral sent to the office.

IMS P.E. uniforms may be purchased, in the office, for a fee of $20.00.  This uniform can be used throughout the student’s middle school years at IMS.

 2.--Participation/Effort:

Students will be given (1) participation point of credit each day for positively adding to the atmosphere of the class.  If a student makes an effort to do their best in an activity and follows the rules for the day he or she will receive full credit.

3.--Behavior/Citizenship:

Students will be given (1) participation point of credit each day for conducting themselves under the rules and guidelines for P.E. since the facilities and equipment which will be used throughout the year can be potentially dangerous.  Any violation of P.E. rules and directions will result in loss of credit and may lead to further disciplinary action.  Other behavior problems which are outlined in the student handbook will also result in loss of credit.

 Attendance:

Students must be in class on time to receive full credit, (3) points.  If a student has an excused absence he or she may ask for a make-up work slip from the teacher for the time missed.  Upon completion of make-up work the student will receive full credit for the time missed. If a student has an unexcused absence he or she will not receive credit and will not be allowed to make up the time missed. A number of make-up activities can be completed as long as they are signed off by a coach, parent or supervising adult.  If a student is tardy and is excused with a pass, he or she will be allowed to participate in the class with full credit.  If a student is tardy and is not excused, he or she will loose (1) point credit for participation.  Excessive tardiness will result in parent contact and disciplinary action taken by the school administration.

If a student is injured or ill a note from home will excuse him/her from some or all participation for that day.  He/she, however, may be asked to suit down and participate in a limited or inactive capacity (for example: scorekeeper, referee, teacher helper, or modified activities).  They might be asked to do an alternate written physical education related assignment.  A doctor’s note is required to excuse a student from missing more than two consecutive days.  Students will need to make up excused, nonparticipation days in order to get credit as is expected in all other courses.

Final Grade:                           The formula for determining your grade is:

Participation = 75% of the total points for final grade.

Written work= 25% of the total points for final grade.

Students will receive (3) points per day for participation.  1 Point will be awarded to each of three categories.  Dressing--Citizenship--Participation daily.  During the (12) week Trimester the total participation points will be approximately (180) points.  Approximately (60) to (80) points will make up the total written grade.  The written grade will consist of tests, quizzes and skill testing during the trimester.  The final grade will be computed by adding the total points earned during the trimester and dividing that by the total number of points possible.  Then multiply by (100) to come up with a percentage.  The student’s final letter grade will be found in the following table:

A        100 %

A-        92.99

B+        89.99

B          86.99

B-        82.99
